Are You Interested in Escaping the City?
When I first heard about EscapeTheCity.org I thought it was a “green environmentalist” site for people who want to quit the urban environment to downsize and go and live in the countryside, surrounded by solar power, windmills and growing their own produce.
In fact it’s nothing to do with that.
Rather, the name comes from the “city” as in “City of London” – which is the UK’s primary financial district. “Escape The City” is about something I’m in full agreement with. Namely, breaking out of the corporate nine to five – especially with large corporations, and in particular with stuffy City financial institutions.
Escape the City is a community for corporate professionals who want to do something different.
It was started by two UK graduates in 2010 called Dom Jackman and Rob Symington. Both were dissatisfied with their jobs in London’s financial sector. And both quit to start their own initiative to help other people find viable alternatives to the conventional corporate nine to five with large companies that tends to be the standard-issue for most graduates nowadays.
As they say, the site has three main aims:
- As a community of motivated corporate professionals who want to ‘do something different’ with their careers.
- It’s a philosophy based on the belief that there is more to life than doing work that doesn’t matter to you.
- And it’s a platform that connects people for exciting career changes, innovative start-ups & adventures.
Within just one year the site has grown enormously and now has some 30 000 members.
If you’re stuck in a corporate nine to five job with a big corporate company where you don’t feel fulfilled or appreciated, and you want to find a viable alternative then Escape The City could be something for you.
Escapethecity.org is basically an online bourse or database for opportunities with smaller companies, start-ups, social organizations, charities both at home and elsewhere in the world, both paid and unpaid, as an alternative to the conventional rigid “good job in the city” situation.
It’s for people who are looking for practical alternatives to the conventional nine-to-five. And in particular, for people who are stuck in so-called “good-jobs with large stuffy financial institutions and blue chip companies in the City of London and elsewhere.
As they say, It’s not about opting out. Nor is Escape The City necessarily about not working as an employee or about becoming self-employed. Rather, it’s about realising that many people want to achieve MORE than what they are able to in their current jobs. And it’s about finding opportunities that allow you to do this.
The aim is to help people find worthwhile work that they are passionate about and which inspires, excites and fulfils them as well as having a positive impact in the world.
In other words, it’s for people who want to ‘Do Something Different’…
