I’ve been busy of late working on a new project and building a new site.
Along the way I’ve encountered plenty of obstacles, not necessarily large ones, but mostly things that have been getting in the way, things that need resolving.
Technical, admin, content, specific business, marketing and other stuff. In fact, the list of issues to resolve sometimes seems to be never-ending.
Some of these things have been holding up my progress, I’ve had the attitude that I need to get these things resolved and resolved properly before I can proceed.
But today I realised something…
You don’t have to let the whole convoy get held up just because there’s an obstacle in the road.. Just drive round it and sort it out later. Rome wasn’t built in a day and all that.
Project and task management always involves obstacles and issues that have to be dealt with and resolved. Issues right now as well as new obstacles that will pop up in the future.
“Sleep on it” can be excellent advice. There’s more than a grain of truth in this. Let your sub-conscious mind chew over and digest the problem while you get on with something else.
That’s why people often do things like go for a walk when they have a problem at hand that needs a solution.
It’s often the case that something that has blocked and stumped me yesterday suddenly becomes crystal clear today. I then look back later and wonder why it was ever considered to be a problem in the first place.
But the most important thing is to keep on driving forward regardless.
Don’t get stuck fussing over small stuff. Too many people spend too much of their valuable life time fussing, debating, pondering and arguing over minor details.
People spend their time on forums arguing over the merits and demerits of different choices. They agonize over this operating system versus that, different smartphones, e-book readers, MP3 players, cars…
The fact is, pretty well anything and everything can be discussed ad infinitum with no ultimate resolution.
And a further fact is that much of the discussion is irrelevant and inconsequential.
Our world and universe extends all the way from the macro to the micro. You can focus on any level you like. But you don’t have to spend your energy on extreme-micro level issues and arguments.
Another point to bear in mind is that diminishing returns quickly set in on whatever you focus on. So don’t spend too much time on any one issue – whether it’s macro or micro.
In particular, the choices you make when it comes to the small things – and maybe also the not-so-small things, don’t have to be perfect. Just adequate for the task at hand.
Someone on a forum I belong to said something very appropriate on this subject: “Quit majoring in minor stuff”
It’s excellent advice.
Concentrate on the big picture and where you are going – and don’t get waylaid by small matters along the way.
