I used to live in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin.
Prenzlauer Berg is a district of mostly old 19th century apartment buildings located just to the north of the city centre of Berlin.
Prenzlauer Berg, or “Prenzelberg” as it’s sometimes nicknamed is an old and very densely populated working-class neighbourhood that’s now become very popular with young people, students, creative types and young professionals.
It’s now one of the most interesting and fashionable areas to live in Berlin. In Prenzlauer Berg you’ll find plenty of interesting and affordable restaurants, cafes, bars, galleries and interesting shops. Much of the housing stock has been renovated and this is still ongoing. As a result, it’s not as cheap as it once was, and there’s also been an influx of owner occupiers buying up newly renovated apartments.
However, Prenzlauer Berg is still a very lively and interesting place to live, with plenty of night life and a lot going on.
Some people who would have once rented in Prenzlauer Berg – such as younger students and artists on low income are now finding housing in the district of Neukoelln out over on the southern side of the city centre of Berlin. Neukoelln is a staunchly working class district with a load of social problems that’s far removed from being hip and “in”. You could say that Neukoelln is now the old pre-hip Prenzlauer Berg…
Anyway, I’ll talk more about Neukoelln in another post.
Here’s an interesting video montage of street scenes in Prenzlauer Berg which captures the essence of the district:
Prenzlauer Berg – A Day In A Life, by krokymovie.
It’s shot in high-definition and has a great “chilled out”
sound track. Just under 8 minutes long. Enjoy!
